Georgia Took Tuscaloosa 20-17: GameDay Moves to Provo Next
Georgia beat Alabama 20-17 on Saturday night at Bryant-Denny Stadium, and it was not pretty. It did not need to be. The No. 2 Bulldogs went into one of the hardest road environments in the sport, fell behind at halftime, missed a field goal and still found a way to leave with the win.
The numbers say Georgia earned it. The Bulldogs outgained Alabama 455 yards to 346, held the ball for 33:28 and finished with 21 first downs to Alabama's 17. Gunner Stockton completed 18 of 22 passes for 249 yards. Dwight Phillips Jr. ran for 120 yards in his first career start. Georgia converted 7 of 13 third downs.
Alabama made it hard anyway. Keelon Russell threw for 185 yards and Trae'shawn Brown ran for 90. The Tide led at halftime and tied the game at 17 in the second half. That is what a game between the two programs that have split the last six SEC titles is supposed to look like.
The crowd at Bryant-Denny was 100,077. It was 61 degrees and cloudy at kickoff, with a light east wind. Georgia's captains were Chris Cole, Raylen Wilson, Earnest Greene III and Stockton. Georgia won the toss and deferred.
How the Game Turned
Peyton Woodring opened the scoring with a 43-yard field goal in the first quarter. Stockton then hit London Humphreys for a 20-yard touchdown at the end of a 93-yard drive, and Georgia led 10-0.
Alabama answered fast. Russell found Marshall Pritchett for a 22-yard score on a three-play, 89-yard drive that took 1:12. Then EJ Crowell scored from a yard out as the first half ended, capping a 12-play, 80-yard drive, and the Tide went to the locker room up 14-10.
Stockton put Georgia back in front with a 14-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Conor Talty tied it at 17 with a 39-yard field goal. Woodring had also missed wide left from 39 yards, his first miss of the season, and for a while it looked like the kind of mistake that decides these games.
It did not. Georgia got the ball at its own 11 with 10:44 left. Phillips ripped off a 22-yard run. Bo Walker added a 37-yarder. The drive stalled inside the 10, and Woodring made the 23-yard field goal with 5:25 to play for a 20-17 lead.
Alabama got as far as the Georgia 34 on its next drive and punted. Georgia got the ball back with 3:14 left. A 17-yard catch by tight end Elyiss Williams on third-and-7 kept the chains moving, a 15-yard personal foul on Alabama helped finish it, and Georgia ran out the final minutes.
The game was not without controversy. Late in the fourth quarter, Alabama had a pass in the end zone where many viewers saw pass interference that was not called. It will be talked about in Tuscaloosa for a long time. It does not change the box score.
Georgia Is No. 1 Again
Sunday's AP poll moved Georgia from No. 2 to No. 1. The Bulldogs got 66 of 70 first-place votes. It is the first time Georgia has been No. 1 in the AP poll since September 2024.
The rest of the top of the poll moved too. Notre Dame went from No. 3 to No. 2 after a 58-7 win against Stanford. Miami is No. 3. Ohio State is No. 4. Indiana is No. 5. Alabama stayed at No. 6 even with the loss, which tells you how much respect voters have for how close the game was. Texas fell from No. 1 to No. 7 after losing to Oklahoma. BYU stayed at No. 8. Oregon dropped out of the poll entirely.
For Georgia, the win goes beyond one Saturday. The Bulldogs are 6-0 and 4-0 in the SEC. They have scored 277 points through six games, the most in a six-game start in program history, passing the 270 points the 1910 team scored. Kirby Smart is now 123-21 at Georgia. This was his third win against Alabama and his first in the regular season. The other two came in the 2021 national championship game and the 2025 SEC Championship Game.
Georgia has now won two straight against Alabama. The two programs have each won three of the last six SEC titles, and they split last season. Alabama won in Athens during the regular season, and Georgia won the rematch in the SEC Championship Game. Saturday was the first of what could be two meetings again this year. If both teams keep winning, Atlanta in December is a real possibility. Alabama fell to 16-2 at home in the Kalen DeBoer era and is 5-1, 3-1 in the SEC.
The SEC has nine teams in the AP Top 25: Georgia at No. 1, Alabama at No. 6, Texas at No. 7, Ole Miss at No. 9, Missouri at No. 13, Tennessee at No. 14, Kentucky at No. 15, Mississippi State at No. 16 and LSU at No. 22.
Georgia now has the inside track in the league. Being 4-0 with a road win at Alabama is a strong place to be in the middle of October. But the Bulldogs still have a long conference schedule to play, and nobody in the SEC wins the league in October.
Alabama's situation is more complicated. One loss to the new No. 1 does not end anything. But the Tide go straight back on the road this week, and the margin for another slip is a lot smaller now.
The box score points to one clear problem for the Tide. Russell completed 16 of 31 passes. Alabama did not throw an interception, but it did not create enough in the passing game to keep drives alive, and it finished 6 of 13 on third down. Georgia ran 61 plays to Alabama's 60, yet gained more than 100 more yards.
The run game was there. Alabama averaged more than five yards a carry with 161 rushing yards on 29 attempts, and Brown had 90 of them. The question for DeBoer's staff is why the Tide only ran it 29 times in a game they led at halftime. Against Tennessee, in a loud road stadium, leaning on Brown would make sense.
Georgia's offense came into the night averaging 51.4 points per game, the best in the country. Alabama was second at 49.6. Holding the Bulldogs to 20 is a real defensive result. It just was not enough.
What Comes Next Saturday
Alabama's next game is at No. 14 Tennessee on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC at Neyland Stadium. The Vols are 5-1 and moved up a spot in Sunday's poll. A ranked road game seven days after a loss to Georgia is a real test of how this Alabama team responds.
Georgia stays home. Auburn visits Sanford Stadium at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN on the same afternoon. The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry has gone Georgia's way in each of the last four meetings, most recently 20-10 a year ago.
ESPN's College GameDay is going to BYU for No. 2 Notre Dame at No. 8 BYU on Saturday night. It is only the second time the show has been to Provo. The first was in 2009.
Rece Davis hosts with Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard, Pat McAfee and Nick Saban. The show runs from 7 to 10 a.m. MT, which is 9 a.m. to noon ET, on ESPN, ESPNU, the ESPN App and Disney+. BYU said the exact spot on campus will be announced later.
Kickoff is 5:30 p.m. MT, 7:30 p.m. ET, on ABC at LaVell Edwards Stadium. It is the first game between two top-10 teams ever played in Provo. Notre Dame is the highest-ranked opponent to visit since No. 1 USC in 2004. BYU is 5-0 after a 24-10 win against Iowa State. Notre Dame is 6-0. Both programs have been winning for a while. BYU is 28-4 since the start of 2024. Notre Dame is 30-4 in the same stretch. The last time these teams met was 2022 in Las Vegas, a 28-20 Notre Dame win in the Shamrock Series.
The Irish lead the all-time series 7-2, but the last time they came to Provo, in 2004, BYU won 20-17.
Saturday is loaded beyond Provo and Knoxville. No. 4 Ohio State visits No. 5 Indiana. No. 13 Missouri visits No. 9 Ole Miss. No. 16 Mississippi State visits No. 22 LSU. No. 18 Oklahoma State visits No. 20 Houston.
The Ohio State and Indiana game could shape the Big Ten race for the rest of the season. Indiana is 6-0. Ohio State is 5-1. Whoever wins gets a big edge in a conference where the top of the standings is crowded.
Georgia went into Tuscaloosa and won a game that was close the entire way, and the Bulldogs are No. 1 because of it. Alabama played well enough to win and did not. Both teams have a big Saturday ahead before anyone can say what the loss means for the Tide.
GameDay picked Provo, and that is the right call. A top-10 game at LaVell Edwards Stadium, with both teams unbeaten and real playoff stakes for each of them, is the best setting of the weekend.
