It’s a patient approach that suggests the front office is thinking two or three years down the road rather than chasing this October.

The Dodgers’ Deadline Math Just Got More Complicated

Los Angeles entered July as a team that could plausibly stand pat, but a pair of injuries may push them toward the buyer’s market regardless. Shohei Ohtani is set to miss his scheduled Wednesday pitching start due to left knee inflammation, and catcher Will Smith is expected to be sidelined for at least another month with a neck injury. Losing Smith behind the plate for an extended stretch is the kind of gap contenders rarely plan for in July, and it may force the front office to prioritize catching depth over other roster needs heading into deadline week.

That search may not be an easy one. Both the Yankees and the Rays were spotted scouting Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers at Wrigley Field over the weekend, and Jeffers — who has returned from injury posting a .941 OPS — looks like one of the more attractive names on the catching market this summer. If the Dodgers are shopping in that same lane, expect a competitive market for one of the deadline’s more clearly-defined needs.
