December Football Is When Seasons Are Made and Broken

BSN NFL Coverage

Week 15 of the NFL season is the first week where the playoff bracket begins to take its final shape. Six teams can clinch postseason berths this weekend. Five teams face effective elimination if results go against them. And the tiebreaker scenarios have become complex enough that a single game in the early Sunday window could affect the playoff hopes of teams playing in the late window.

This is the part of the NFL season that rewards the teams who built their rosters for December. The teams with offensive line depth, defensive versatility, and quarterback resilience are the ones that win in cold weather, on short weeks, and in hostile environments. The teams that relied on scheme novelty and early-season momentum are running out of both.

AFC Clinching Scenarios

Denver has already clinched the AFC West and can secure the number one seed and a first-round bye with a win against the Chargers on Sunday night. The Broncos have won eleven straight games, and their rushing attack — which is averaging 168 yards per game during the streak — has been the foundation of their dominance. They do not need to throw to win, which means weather, field conditions, and defensive game plans cannot slow them down.

New England clinches the AFC East with a win or a Miami loss. The Patriots have the league’s best turnover differential at plus-18, and their defense has held opponents to 17 or fewer points in nine of their fourteen games. They are not flashy, but they are ruthlessly efficient — the kind of team that makes one fewer mistake than their opponent every Sunday and wins 11 or 12 games doing it.

Jacksonville clinches the AFC South with a win over Houston in a game that doubles as a division rivalry and a potential first-round playoff preview. The Jaguars’ pass rush versus Houston’s offensive line is the key matchup — if Jacksonville can generate pressure with their front four, their coverage unit will do the rest.

NFC Clinching Scenarios

Seattle clinched its division weeks ago but can lock up the NFC’s one seed with a win and an Eagles loss. The Seahawks have not lost at home this season and are 11-point favorites against a struggling opponent. The question is not whether Seattle wins — it is whether they can rest starters in the fourth quarter and preserve health for January.

Philadelphia, San Francisco, Chicago, and Green Bay are all in position to clinch this weekend with the right combination of results. The most interesting scenario involves the NFC North: if Chicago wins and Green Bay loses, the Bears clinch the division. If both win, the race extends to Week 16. And if both lose — which is possible given their opponents — Detroit re-enters the conversation despite a season that has been defined by inconsistency.

The Elimination Zone

Five teams face mathematical or effective elimination this weekend. Two NFC South teams, an AFC North team, and two wild card hopefuls are all in positions where a loss essentially ends their season. For these franchises, Week 15 is not a regular season game — it is a playoff game in everything but name.

The cruelty of the NFL’s schedule is that December football produces these moments every year. Teams that were 6-4 and feeling good about their playoff chances in November find themselves 7-7 and facing elimination in December. The margin between contender and also-ran is thinner than it appears in the standings.
