Ohio State Took Iowa City: Iowa Fell 31-14 Before Week 6 Goes to Tuscaloosa

October 05, 2026•7 min read

Ohio State left Kinnick Stadium with a 31-14 win on Saturday. The game was in Iowa City. The posted kickoff was 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS. College GameDay had set up on the Pentacrest that morning. The next GameDay stop is already posted, and it is not a result. Alabama hosts Georgia on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC in Tuscaloosa. That final is NOT FOUND. The game has not been played.

Broadway Sports Network is filing the Saturday box first. A fast recap that skips the count is not the useful part. The useful part is the score. The drive list comes next. The clock on the following kickoff comes after that.

The quarter file from Ohio State reads 10 then 7 then 7 then 7. Iowa reads 6 then 0 then 0 then 8. The Buckeyes are 4-1 and 2-0 in the Big Ten. The Hawkeyes are 4-1 and 1-1. Both clubs were ranked for the kickoff. Ohio State's own recap lists the Buckeyes at No. 5 and Iowa at No. 14.

The box score page lists attendance at 69,250. The actual start on that page is 2:39 p.m. The game ended at 5:50 p.m. Duration is listed at 3:11. The weather note on the page says sunny and 69 degrees, with wind from the northwest at 9 mph. Those are site facts. They are not a style of telling the story.

Julian Sayin completed 20 of 27 passes for 324 yards with three scores. Jeremiah Smith caught 11 passes for 206 yards with two of those scores. Ja'Kobi Jackson and Bo Jackson combined for 142 rushing yards with one score. Ohio State finished with 484 yards. Iowa finished with 238. At the half the yardage edge was 259 to 133. In the third quarter it was 119 to 28.

The first Ohio State score was a 15-yard pass from Sayin to Devin McCuin. Connor Hawkins kicked, and the board read 7-0. The school recap places that score on the opening possession after Kenyatta Jackson Jr. forced a fumble and Christian Alliegro came up with the ball. The word for that exchange is a forced fumble. This note does not need a second label for it.

Caden Buhr then kicked a 43-yard field goal at 10:01 of the first quarter. The drive was 11 plays for 50 yards. Iowa trailed 7-3. Hawkins answered from 28 yards at 4:17. That drive was 10 plays for 50 yards, and Ohio State led 10-3. Buhr hit from 48 yards as the first quarter ended. That drive was 10 plays for 40 yards. The quarter closed at 10-6.

Smith's first score came with 12 seconds left in the half. Sayin found him from 12 yards. The drive was 9 plays for 84 yards. Hawkins kicked. Ohio State led 17-6 at the break. The school recap says that catch tied Smith with Chris Olave at 35 career receiving scores.

The third quarter belonged to the same pair. At 6:11, Sayin hit Smith for 57 yards. The drive was 5 plays for 75 yards. Hawkins kicked, and the lead was 24-6. Ohio State says that catch moved Smith to 36 career receiving scores and past Olave's program mark of 34. Jaylen McClain intercepted Iowa on the next possession. The Buckeyes took a 24-6 lead into the fourth quarter.

Ja'Kobi Jackson scored from 7 yards at 12:47 of the fourth. The drive was 10 plays for 70 yards. Hawkins kicked, and the lead was 31-6. The school recap calls it Jackson's fifth game in a row with a score this season. Iowa answered at 9:30. Braeden Jackson scored from 2 yards. The drive was 8 plays for 75 yards. Reece Vander Zee threw the two-point pass, and the final margin was 31-14. Ohio State then held the ball for the rest of the afternoon.

Smith's career file, as printed by Ohio State after the game, is 207 receptions and 3,381 receiving yards. He is the program leader in both counts. The 11 catches moved him past Emeka Egbuka and K.J. Hill. He is seven receptions short of the Big Ten top 10 on that list. DaeSean Hamilton and Isaiah Williams are tied for 10th at 214. The 206-yard afternoon was his 15th career game with at least 100 receiving yards, tying Marvin Harrison Jr. for the program mark. He is also the only receiver in program history with more than 3,000 career yards. The yardage record he passed on Sept. 19 against Kent State belonged to Michael Jenkins at 2,898. On the conference yardage list, John Standeford's 3,788 still sits ahead of him by 407 yards. Braylon Edwards holds the Big Ten career mark for receiving scores at 39. Smith is at 36.

Defensive counts from the school recap start with four tackles for loss. The same recap lists two sacks. It also lists three pass breakups. Qua Russaw and Kenyatta Jackson Jr. led that work. Russaw had five tackles. He also had 1.5 tackles for loss. He also had one sack. Jackson Jr. recorded his first career strip sack.

The series book moved with the result. Ohio State earned its 49th win against Iowa and now leads the series 49-15-3. In games where both teams were ranked, the Buckeyes have won the last eight meetings and hold a 16-4 mark. Since the start of the 2019 season, Ohio State is 29-4 away from home. The school says that road win total is the highest in the country across the same span. Iowa entered Saturday at 14-3 at home since the start of the 2024 season. The 17-point road win is the largest by a visiting club at Kinnick since Purdue won by 17 in 2021.

GameDay's desk made picks before the kickoff. Those picks are a record of what was said on the set. They are not a method for the next game. Desmond Howard picked Iowa. Caitlin Clark, the guest picker, picked Iowa. Nick Saban picked Ohio State. Pat McAfee picked Ohio State. Kirk Herbstreit picked Ohio State. The result matched the three Ohio State picks and missed the two Iowa picks. This note is not turning that count into a rule.

The forward file is a set of posted clocks. Iowa visits Washington on Friday, Oct. 9, at 9 p.m. ET. On3 and the conference release list the television window as FOX or FS1. The ESPN schedule card places the game at Husky Stadium. A final for that Friday game is NOT FOUND.

Maryland visits Ohio State on Saturday, Oct. 10. Ohio State lists kickoff at 4:15 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network at Ohio Stadium. The series history on the school site is 9-0 for the Buckeyes, including 5-0 in Columbus. Ohio State has scored at least 37 points in each of those nine meetings and the site lists a 55.1 average. That average is history. It is not a number for Saturday. Saturday's final against Maryland is NOT FOUND.

Alabama against Georgia is the GameDay game, and it stays unplayed in this file. Georgia's athletics site set the kickoff on Sept. 28: Oct. 10, 7:30 p.m. ET, ABC, in Tuscaloosa. On3 and the ESPN schedule card both place it at Bryant-Denny Stadium. AL.com reported on Oct. 3 that GameDay chose Tuscaloosa for the Week 6 stop. The same report said the show window runs from 9 a.m. to noon ET. It listed ESPN. It also listed ESPNU. It also listed Disney+ with the ESPN App.

The ranking numbers attached to that announcement were No. 7 Alabama and No. 2 Georgia. Those numbers describe the Oct. 3 announcement. They are not a claim that a later poll is frozen. A separate schedule card later in the week printed different ranking digits and left the kickoff blank. This note keeps the Georgia athletics clock and does not swap in that other card.

The Saturday results that were already final when GameDay made the call are part of the evidence, not a script for Tuscaloosa. AL.com reported that Alabama had beaten Mississippi State 56-23. The same report said Georgia had beaten Vanderbilt 38-14. Neither score is a stand-in for Oct. 10. The Alabama-Georgia final is NOT FOUND.

Unfiltered, in this case, means the Iowa City count stops at 31-14 and the Tuscaloosa count does not start. Film can explain why Sayin had Smith on two of the three scoring throws. The evidence for that sentence is the box, not a mood about the crowd. Kinnick was loud enough to be the GameDay site. The scoreboard still ended 31-14.

The next useful hour is Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET. Until that hour produces a final, Broadway Sports Network has a destination and a kickoff. It does not have a winner.
